The Style Council – Speak Like a Child（1983）

みなさんは冠詞の［a］をどのように発音するでしょうか。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　［This is a pen.］の［a］の部分です。

おそらくほとんどの人は「ア」と発音すると思います。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　しかしながら、ネイティブスピーカーの英語を注意深く聞いていると、アルファベットのAを読む時と同じ「エイ」と発音している場合があります。

基本的にはどちらも間違いではないようですが、 会話の流れのなかで「ア」では聞き漏らされてしまう可能性があるので、あえて冠詞を強調したい場合に「エイ」と発音したり、あるいは次に来る名詞がすぐに思いつかなかったときに、少し時間を稼ぐために「エイ」と発音したりするようです。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

ある人が最初に「エイ」と発音したら、他の人たちもそれに合わせて以降の会話内ではみんなが「エイ」を使ったりすることもあるそうです。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　日本語でもそういうことってありますよね。

冠詞を強調したい場合というのがどういう状況かと言うと、

「今度、車を買うつもりなんだ」　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　「もしかしてメルセデス？？」

［ Well, I’m going to buy a car, but probably not Mercedes.］　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　（いや、車は買うつもりだけど、おそらくメルセデスではないかな）

みたいな感じです。

スタイル・カウンシルのデビュー曲であるこの曲のなかでは、タイトル部分を歌うときに比較的はっきりと「エイ」と発音しているのがわかります。

他のところに出て来る［a］は「エイ」とは歌っていませんから、この部分の冠詞を強調したかったのか、あるいはメロディに乗せるのに「エイ」の方が都合が良かったのかもしれませんね。
