The Doobie Brothers – What A Fool Believes (1979)
『ローリングストーン誌が選ぶ最も偉大な500曲』において見事343位に選ばれていることで有名なドゥービーブラザースの大ヒット曲です。
マイケル・マクドナルドとケニー・ロギンスの共作ですが、この曲も非常に解釈が難しく、和訳されたものを読んでみてもどれも今一つしっくり来ない感じが残る曲です。
英語の表現がただでさえわかりにくいのですが、音楽の切れ目と歌詞の切れ目が一致していないところも和訳を難しくしている原因です。
タイトルを直訳すると「ある愚か者が信じたこと」
過去に付き合っていた女性と偶然再会した主人公は、また彼女とよりを戻せることを信じてあの手この手でアプローチしますが、女性は戸惑ったような愛想笑いを浮かべて立ち去ってしまいます。
それもそのはず、 主人公にとってはこの女性がずっと大切な存在でしたが、 昔付き合っていたと信じているのは実は主人公の男性だけで、女性にとってこの愚か者が大切な存在であったことなど一度も無かったからです。
この曲の味わい深いところは、この哀れな勘違い男を責めるわけでもなく、笑うわけでもなく、たとえ勘違いであったとしても「always better than nothing」（ いつだって何もないよりはいい）と歌っているところでしょうか。
一説には共作者のケニー・ロギンスが相方のジム・メッシーナについて書いた曲とも言われています。だとすると、なんだか一人で勘違いしているけれども、それで本人が幸せならまあそれでもいいか。。。という暖かい視線に合点がいきます。 可能性があるように見えることは無いように見えるよりはずっと良いですからね。
共作者のケニー・ロギンスと畑をバックに熱唱。
何十年経ってもケニー・ロギンスがイケメンでびっくりします。
秀逸なカバーバージョンも多数あります。
テレビCMでもおなじみのマット・ビアンコ版。
