2枚組のホワイトアルバムに収録されているアコースティックナンバーです。
演奏はポール・マッカートニーのギターと足踏みの音、そして鳥のさえずりだけで構成されています。
ビートルズは初期の作品から手拍子の音を効果的に使っていますが、ポールはとくに人間打楽器的なものが好きなようで、後年ソロになってからも膝や太ももを叩く音をレコーディングに取り入れたりしています。
イギリスでブラックバードと言えば、ツグミ科のクロウタドリを指すそうです。

この曲は「リトルロック高校事件」に着想を得て書かれました。
それまで白人専用だったアメリカ・アーカンソー州のリトルロック・セントラル高校に、9名の黒人生徒の入学が認められました。
ところが当時の州知事が州兵を出して黒人生徒の入学を妨害したため、最終的に黒人生徒たちはアイゼンハワー大統領の命令を受けた陸軍の護衛付きで登校したという事件です。
イギリスで鳥は女性を表すスラングです。黒人のなかでもとりわけ苦労が多かった黒人女性が飛び立つのを少しでも応援したかったというポールが、アメリカの公民権運動への支持を明確に表明した曲です。
